As educators, we often encounter students who struggle with behavior, attention, or emotional regulation. Rather than reacting punitively, it's helpful to think of student behavior as a form of communication. This is where the tiered RtI2 framework shines. It provides schools with a structured system to identify challenges early and respond with tailored support. At the universal level (Tier 1), clear expectations and social-emotional lessons set the tone. For students needing more, Tier 2 offers targeted interventions, while Tier 3 provides individualized plans like Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans. When schools effectively implement these layers, they move from reacting to behaviors to understanding and addressing their root causes. Teachers, families, and students all benefit when we take a problem-solving approach rooted in data and compassion.
